I moved some ground wires around(changed grounding scheme a bit) somehow the voltage on the chassis is down to around 3v now, and the amp seems to be working better. Less of the midrange hum too. I don't know what was going on. I think I have inadvertantly helped it though.

I'd think you should really plug into a grounded outlet. I have the same thing in my house, almost all of the outlets were changed to three holes at some point in time, but only about half of them really have a ground connection. I just run an extension cord from one of the good ones to my practice area. If your amp is designed for a three prong plug you should give it what it wants :)
