FWIW these two amps have been stored in my bedroom since I've had them. Both were bought used though. The Traynor is mine and the Fender is a friends amp. But since in my care niether has been subjected to high humidity. In fact I had the same thoughts as you about it. And while I wasn't aware of any way the amps could have been exposed to moisture, I did try to "dry them out". I did the 24 hour burn. I did the blow drier. Both boards are dry as toast. It became my reasoning that the "black" in those boards was of a particular makup that the carbon in them can somehow align itself into a resistive element given enough time and enough voltage. I've never seen it with new boards. In fact I've only seen it on older well used amps. So thats my theory anyhow. I wish drying them out was the solution. There are plenty of builders, some by trade, that are using that board material and we don't hear about any problems with those amps. So I think it's a time and pressure thing. I can also say that I am a little clumsy with my soldering technique and both of these amps have had the boards stripped and reloaded before I recognised the problem. So perhaps excess heat could play a roll also. Anyway...That black board material has been a problem for me in older amps. But it did getme to finally start making my own boards. Now I just have to get up the nerve for tearing both amps apart and rebuilding them ![]() ![]() Chuck |
