Tube Preamp Pedal
Anyone out there run across any good designs for a tube preamp/distortion pedal? (Prefer 100% tube design.)

I'd love to get a schematic for a bad cat 2-tone or something like that..... anyone see that anywhere?

Thanks,
Jack

The Bad Cat 2-tone is probably an evolution of the Matchless Hotbox, which there are multiple schematics for floating around the net. I've been accumulating tube pedal info on a page on my site: http://amps.zugster.net/articles/tube-pedals/ which might be useful to you.

Book Of The Day The Ultimate Tone, Volume III by Kevin O'Connor
Have you ever wondered if there is a better way to build a Bassman, Champ, Plexi, an 800, AC-30, Bulldog or Portaflex? Or you wanted to build an SVT with off-the-shelf parts? How about a master-volume amp that doesn’t change tone with the master setting? Everything you need to know is right here, including: proper grounding techniques, wiring methods, and mechanical considerations. Eighteen chapters cover the “iconic” amps everyone knows and loves, with schematics and layouts for each, along with the technical history of the product. Eyelet-board and chassis-mounted tube socket construction is used throughout, for easy servicing and modding. TUT3 is very accessible even if you cannot fully read a schematic and is a "must have" if you are going to build an amp for your self.

Hey Guys

You may want to look at the Pedal kit at Allenamps.com. It's called the Sole Mate.

Normally I wouldn't advocate for something I havven't heard but this is Dave Allen. Everything I've gotten from him has been top notch.

Very cool site, Adam. Have you tried any of the tube preamps ? Any suggestions ?

Yeah, the Sole Mate kit for 199. may be just the ticket..... save lots of time trying to get the thing together from scratch. Seems it's just like the Matchless Hot Box in function/features. My only concern with it is the totally exposed tubes... would've been great if they had the tube sockets at the bottom of the pedal.

There's a schematic for the Garnet Herzog in TUT3. It's a SE amp used as a preamp. Think American Woman.

Mark,
Pardon my acronym ignorance.... SE is single-ended, right? This means that this preamp has an output transformer ? (Sorry, don't have and can't afford the TUTs right now... wish I could!)

I've been thinking about building a pedal using a mini output xformer to possibly get both preamp and output stage distortion from the same box.

No, I haven't tried any of them -- I started gathering the information because I want to build one myself. I'm working on one with 6021W sub-mini tubes, which I believe are what's in the Siegmund Micro Tube Doubledrive. Haven't had time to get very far with that yet though...

The Sole Mate has gotten several raves on the WeberVST bulletin board -- go there and scroll down a bit and you should find them. For $199 for the kit it sounds like a great deal to me. Expect for those standup tubes of course....if I had one I'd probably bend up a piece of aluminum grill to install over them.
