I once read that "caramel coloring" as used in Coke, was actually purified lamp black!  
I'll have to check the two rolls of black paper tape I got from StewMac to see if they are conductive. I don't recall either having the name Union on them (they each have a different name), but I did notice that the DCR of my pickup went up when I taped up the coils... I assumed it was from compacting the wire. At the same time my pickup is very bright, so it doesn't seem the tape had a detrimental effect on the sound. I didn't pot the pickup either.  
Interesting, to say the least.
