A couple years back I went crazy with pentode preamp circuits and built craploads of them into everything. I still do. I heart them very much!  
 
My favourite tube is the 6SJ7 - 6V heater, cheap as chips, loads of them round, and my favourite sound out of 6SJ7, 6SH7, 6SK7, EF184, EF183, EF86. I never got to try a 6AU6 tho i have some at home.  
 
I don't know the theory behind it, but here is a nifty chart that has circuit values for a bunch of tubes:

It makes a *huge* difference to the sound as to whether you use these values or not. They're out of an old amateur radio design handbook.
