Is the 6L31 a 7-pin tube? I have never heard of or used a 6L31 before but I am a big fan of 7-pin tubes that are electrically similar to other tubes. I am working on a Matchless Clubman homebrew of sorts right now with 6V6-GTs, a 6AU6 (7-pin version of a 6SH7), a 6AV6 (7-pin tube that is one half of a 12AX7) and a standard 12AX7 for the phase inverter. If you know enough to look around for obscure tubes, you can find some great sounds for little money. I say give it a shot and see how it sounds.
Not to let the cat out of the bag, but you may want to keep your eyes open for RCA blackplate 5V6 tubes, which are blackplate 6V6-GTs using the 5-volt heater taps instead of the 6.3-volt taps. Did I mention they are dirt cheap?
