If you want to spray, use an acrylic paint, and lacquer will sit on top of it happily, and it can survive potting temperatures easily. Can see no reason why paint would damage fibreboard.  
Alternatively, you could just go ahead and make the top flatwork directly from a material of your choice. Many companies sell sparkly and pearloid effect board in various thickness. If you are making 'buckers I can't see any reason why they would HAVE to be forbon - there is little value in using forbon for bucker because vintage people don't demand it.  
Personally, I'd go for handpainted dragons over paisley.
