The freelance thing can be as rewarding or MORE rewarding than a joe-job. I've been a self-employed consultant for 8 years. Here are some things that I've learned:
1) Health insurance is very, very costly. You need to determine the risk you are willing to live with, and the cost you're willing to pay. There are plans to suit everyone.
2) Security? Career Advancement? There's NO PLACE to get that any more. With corporate leadership focusing almost solely on shareholder return and the "bottom line" just about anything is fair game...including hiring people in other countries, layoffs, theft, grift, etc. It's up to me to make sure I am employable, so it would follow that people will employ me.
3) A good accountant helps with all the bureaucracy and silly paperwork.
