|hasserl||Try a 6AU6|
I used a 6AU6 in a Matchless Clubman sort-of-clone. It turned out fantastic. Before I started the project I was a little hesitant because I feared that with only two gain stages the amp would not be able to give me enough of a dirty sound for classic rock or blues rock tones. Boy was I wrong! This amp has more gain on tap than a JCM800 2204! (I've A/B'ed between the two, the clubman sort-of-clone easily wins that contest) Yet it retains a wonderfully sweet clean tone with the volume rolled back a little. I credit the extraordinary performance to the 6AU6. That little pentode must be doing something magical in that circuit.
