there is a possibility that inserting a signal is forcing the power amp into oscillation, and causing it to run at max power as long as you're playing, and then when you stop, there isn't sufficient gain to sustain the oscillation. a high frequency oscillation would tend to make the amp sound really bad from the interaction of the oscillation and the guitar signal.
