Douglas Self doesn't suggest that tubes per se are a "pain in the ass" (not his words ), what he's saying (or at least trying to say) is that the hype and horrible overprices of some tube-amps are a real PIA. I have had some chats with him (namedropping, eh?), and he's a very reasonable guy, and he can take an argument, and he has changed his mind when somebody has proved him wrong.
