I really do believe that snippet about having the output section distort first, then the PI, then the preamp. In any case, you really need the output section to distort first before you start getting that great "roll the vol down for clean control".  
    I have heard that from several other sources and it makes a lot of sense to me. I guess that could be confirmed using a scope to see where the signal starts to distort at various settings of the guitar and amp.  
    Thanks for keeping us posted on all of these great amps that we would never see at Guitar Center!   ;)
