6SN7 is a low gain dual triode, The 6SL7 is the higher gain (70) of the octal based dual triodes. The 6SC7 (used in early Fender amps)is the same as the 6SL7 except it has internally connected cathodes.  
6SN7 is used both at the input stage and in the phase inverter of hifi and musical instrument amps.
