Small power transformers as chokes?

Hi all,  
 
 
 
Has anyone tried using the primary of a small power transformer, such as a 240V-12V, 1A, or something like that?  
 
 
 
I know it's probably not ideal, as chokes are constructed with a gap between laminations, and PT's aren't, but it'd still work, wouldn't it?  
 
 
 
Any comments?
