Your number 5 choice (Carlton's tweed Dumble, EV's and the Valley Arts guitar) is THE tone as far as I am concerned. That sound is basically the reason for my Dumbleitis.  
Would this have been pre Skyliner stuff? Do you know if this was an EL34 or 6L6 output?

Same here, Peter. That amp is definitely pre-Skyliner stuff (which was a 90s thing). Chances are that Larry's amp was tweaked to death by Dumble himself, but whatever was done to it was probably not a great departute from the schematic that's on Steve's page.  
The only thing I have found that works for me is using a smaller coupling cap between the OD1 and OD2 stages, and dumping some highs to gorund at the output of the overdrive. With those two tweaks in place, the amp can be dialed in to sound very good and very close to that Dumble/Strat sound Larry had in the 80s.
