But you mean safer for me, and not the transformer?  
Exactly, I was measuring an OT once, and got around 300v AC on the primary, pretty scary.  
OT primaries always are subjected to high DC voltage. Would a high AC voltage have an ill effect on it?  
I'll have to defer to someone more knowledgeable than me on this one.  
However, I have used both 10v and 6.3v filament trannies with no apparent ill effects. YMMV.
