Overlap means you have to be careful with the depth of the blade or have a perfectly straight edge on the tolex. Contact cement will stick tolex to tolex fairly effectively. On a lot of old amps, that's where the cover kicks up though. FWIW, I use a white wax pencil, a standard utility knife, a steel straight edge, an aluminum yardstick, and contact cement. I apply the contact cement with a nylon or plastic putty knife. I do it in the doorway of my garage and wear a mask.
