In shortwave radios diodes were used as limiters to keep noise peaks from getting through. When the signal is low enough (line level) it doesn't have enough voltage to turn on the diode. but when it rose enough some got through and this was used to change the bias voltage on a class a triode to diminish its gain. This is one way a diode can act to compress, or more acurately, limit.
