I downloaded Duncan Munro's new Power Supply Designer last night. Quite an improvement over version one. It appears that, everything else being equal, using a choke instead of a resistor results in the screen voltage being much closer to B+. So if I use a fairly low value resistor after the first cap (the Traynor used a 470 ohm), I can get the screen voltage close to B+.
After thinking about this more, I have decided not to rule out a choke and may try the November design.
