One more thing I forgot: the cathode voltage in cathode-biased mode is subtracted from the plate voltage to get the total plate-to-cathode voltage for dissipation calculations. This also allows you to increase the idle current in cathode-biased mode without exceeding plate dissipation. Since the cathode of a fixed-bias amp is usually connected to ground, you have to use the full plate voltage in dissipation calculations. Randall Aiken
