You can affect the taper of a pot to a degree by adding a resistor between the wiper and either of the other terminals. For instance, if you take a 1Meg linear and add a 100K resistor between the wiper and the "lower" terminal, you'll approximate a 100k log (audio) taper pot. Putting the resistor between the wiper and "upper" terminal will give you a closer approximation of an antilog pot. The main problem with this little trick is that the impedance seen by the driving source will vary greatly as you turn the pot.
