I checked into Gurian and they want a really high minimum order, but that was quite a few years ago, maybe they have changed?

Gurian is single coil only anyway. No bucker bobbins.

Looks like they do Nordstrand's bobbins, judging from the pictures.

Nordstrand do their own bobbins with their own laser cutter machine. Got that bit of info through "stoopid cooper" Carey's pickup builder employee on the extended range basses forum

Interesting... on Gurian's site look at the bobbins.

Now look at Nordstrand's site:

I'd say that's the same bobbin, and it's one of Nordstrand's signature models.

Also the split J pickup:

Maybe they do their own bobbins now, but obviously Gurian does have pictures of Nordstrand's bobbins.

Looks alike but I'm just repeating the info I got from Stoopidcooper through a pm on the extended range basses forum. Maybe Gurian did the flatwork for them in the beginning before they got the machine.

Coop explained to me how they program any custom design in CAD and laser cut it from that. "2 hours from design to end product" is what he said to me. Pretty cool!

Yeah, seems like that's the case. I'd imagine those machines are quite expensive... I wonder if they do enough volume to make it worth the coast.

I recently started working with a friend of mine who does CAD work. He's a guitar maker also... we were in business together a while back.... anyway, we are having a bunch of stuff laser cut. All they need is an EPS file, like you can do in many drawing programs, like Adobe Illustrator. You don't even need a CAD file.

At the very least you can have a plywood pattern laser cut and use that for cutting your flatwork. Sure beats making a pattern by hand! We are going to have a bunch of guitar patterns made that way.

Another freaky cool thing we are doing is SLA - Stereo lithography. A CNC controlled laser cures a pattern in the surface of a fluid photosensitive polymer. Then they step in lower so more fluid covers the part, and they build up the layers. You can make just about any 3D part that way.

We are going to make some bobbins that way, and pickup cover models. It's too expensive to make bobbins on a regular basis, but he has access to it, so what the heck!
