Re: Dud rod magnets
It's a good thing I didn't broadcast it because on further review, it really isn't a magnet problem.

It's a combination of clogged ears and a failure on my part to take into account my own #42/#43 gauge formula (D'OH!!!) for determining the output of pickups with different wire gauges.

I had replaced a 9.1k neck pu in my Strat that actually sounded really good with an 8.5k, and the 8.5k was boomy and muddy. What gives? Then I remembered last night that the 9.1k pickup was one I had made with a combination of both #42 and #43 wire, each gauge accounting for about half of the total DCR. Using my own formula it turns out that this 9.1k is really the equivalent of a +/-7.6k pickup wound with all #42 wire. No wonder the 8.5k was so loud and muddy -- it was a hotter pickup!

Anyway, I took a few turns off and brought it down to 8.0k and it sounds a lot better. Think I'll take just a few more off tonight.
