Re: Calling Dave Schwab...
I should have said I unwound a BOAT LOAD of wire! I never saw that much wire on a pickup coils before.

It's all academic anyway because I took a good look at the pickup last night and it's constructed in such a way that you would have to destroy the ceramic magnets to take it apart enough to be able to get at the coils. It's basically held together by the ceramic mags that are glued into a corner where two of the main parts meet, and these mags are of such dimensions that I don't have anything suitable to replace them. They're thicker and longer but not quite as wide as your average guitar bar mag. Now this is the WEIRDEST part by far: One coil read 1.02k, the other 1.04k. No, that is NOT a misprint. I checked several other known quantity pickups laying around the shop and the meter was not malfunctioning. I was expecting something like 12k per coil! Anyway, I'm going to send it back to him and say, sorry I couldn't help. Would you mind if I gave him a way to contact you in case you might be interested in a rewind job? |

Very funny! Low readings, could be there is another version of the pickup wound with larger gauge wire. Earlier or later specs than what I have had in my shop. |

That's weird. I guess they redesigned the pickups. It's been a while since I looked inside the pickup, but from memory, in the originals the bobbins were that translucent plastic, like in the mini humbuckers. The center of each bobbin had a thin steel blade that connected to something (I don't remember) that the screw poles where threaded in, between the coils, and on the back of each bobbin was an alnico magnet, attached to the sheet steel. So it was easy to disassemble. I just put an extra magnet on each side, with the same poles facing, the way a P-90 is set up. There had to be an inch of wire on that sucker! The unwould coil was about half the size. I could take a photo of mine if anyone is interested.
Wow... did it look like heavy wire wound on there?
Sure, what the heck. I'm curious to see the damn thing! I was tempted to buy one of those Epi's, since I always wanted an EB-3, but I'd rather have the original You can use david AT sgdlutherie.com (just replace the AT with a @)

Dave, I just sent him an e-mail telling him you're interested. I'm thinking I might send you the pickup directly to save him the hassle of waiting for it to come back to him and then him sending it to you. |
