The 235 adhesive is not conductive. You're correct to think it's the carbon black.

It's a side effect. The objective is to make the tape totally opaque to light, and the best way to do this is to load it up with carbon black (=soot). The paper backing cannot carry all that much soot, but the adhesive can. The fact that this also makes the adhesive electrically conductive is unimportant in photo applications. Or a slight advantage, as it reduces electrostatic effects.

A larger issue will be that with photography going digital, many products manufactured for silver-based photo use no longer have sufficient market, and will disappear.

I once read that "caramel coloring" as used in Coke, was actually purified lamp black!

Yummy!

I'll have to check the two rolls of black paper tape I got from StewMac to see if they are conductive. I don't recall either having the name Union on them (they each have a different name), but I did notice that the DCR of my pickup went up when I taped up the coils... I assumed it was from compacting the wire. At the same time my pickup is very bright, so it doesn't seem the tape had a detrimental effect on the sound. I didn't pot the pickup either.

Interesting, to say the least.

No problems here with Stew Mac tape. In fact, I'll take what ever anyone want's to get shot of. BTW, I have mentioned before that Scotch still make number 12 tape which is a beige version of number 4. Just color it with Indian Ink.

Spence, I tried india ink with the #12. It had a dark purple hue.

OK, well I'll experiment with something else until I find a successful solution. There will be a way I'm sure. I'm very much into kitchen chemistry where this kind of thing is concerned.
