Bobbin material
Hi guys, find your forum on another site.

I do luthery stuff and have a vintage job. The guitar was brought to a store but came back with missing part in 1 of the 2 humbuckers. 1 bobbin is missing and I can't find a replacement. I'm in the process of "homemaking" one, but I would have a question for its material. It has to have a slot in it instead of regular holes, and i have problem machining this slot. I found a sandwich panel with aluminium skins and a balsa core. I managed to machine it pretty well but I wonder if the aluminium skin would have an effect or not.

I'm new in making PU so I'm not sure if the bobbin material shall not be conductor, magnetized or else...I research this on the web but couldn't find the answer yet.

If the aluminium is acceptable I could isolate it further by doing a composite wrap.

Thanks for your insight.

You should get a plastic bobbin and cut a slot with a Dremel.

Hi, I thought about it but the "modern" plastic bobbin I can found (Stewmac) are not long enough.

They are short by about 1/2 inch from what I need.

Thanks.

Hi Jerry, are you sure the pickup was not made this way intentionaly? I have seen some old humbucker guitars that had a real humbucker in the bridge and another in the neck that only had 1 bobbin. Looked like a regular humbucker but in reality it only had 1 bobbin and was actually a single coil. They did this mainly for keeping the 2 humbucker look. What kind of guitar is it?

Hi, interesting fact!

It is an Aria 5102T 1969...
The inside looks like it was made for 2 coils, with the only one that was there the magnet bar didn't have a secure mounting device (design wise)so it was loose & not remaining at the right place.

You mean I might be going thru all this...maybe for nothing...

Thanks.

Jerry
