Single coil pickups and humcancelling types. I was curious if you chaps have time, could you give me a brief run down on whether or not humcancelling pickups such as Kinmans etc, will every sound as good as real single coil pickups? Thanks Yours Sincerely Mark Abbott PS it isn't a more techical question, but I thought this is the best place to ask the question. |

| Mick | In my opinion , No they won't , there is something missing with the humbucking single coils , and not just noise , can't quite put my finger on it ,they can be very good but there is a difference , I tried 3 sets in all , I prefered the fender fat 50's to all three sets of humbucking strat pickups , so I must have really disliked them , Mick |

| DAve Stephens | Well the technical explanation is NO they won't ever match a real single coil. You can get the Suhr dummy coil and thats the best you'll ever do, and its a great solution. Noiseless single coils all rely on another coil to cancel hum. The problem with all these and humbuckers as well is the hum gets cancelled but also notches in the frequency response at different points also get cancelled so you get a totally different pickup than what they are trying to fake. Noiseless pickups are great if you play really freaking loud with alot of effects, pickup tone doesnt matter alot in a deal like that so you can use and equalizer etc. to fine tune your sound, but if you're just pluggin straight into a tweed amp or any kind of pretty straight tube amp, the faults show up pretty good. You'll notice that lately Buddy Guy and Clapton have both dumped their Lace Sensors for instance, thank you Jeeeezus. The Suhr system is the best idea if you want single coil tone and minimal noise. Me, I like noise, old nasty ugly cigarette and beer smelling amps and singers that can actuall sing.... |

What! You know a singer that can actually sing? My God! I bet he hasn't got his own PA system though! They are the one utterly hopeless member of any line-up Worse than drummers..... Want me to go on? As for smelly amps, I used to be in the TV repair trade and came across an old Burman valve amp belonging to an Indian. I talked him into parting with it as part payment for the TV repair I'd done. What a mistake that was. As soon as the damned thing got hot it smelled like onion bhagees.... Nah, I'm happy with my lemon scented Mesa thanks. |

| Mick | Hey Spence did it make you hungry when you switched it on? and did it only sound good after a night on the town ? Mick |

What, stale curry? Put me off bhagees for years. Terrible amps too, those Burmans. |

| Mick | Give them a few years and a load of misty eyed crap on the internet and they will have their day ( the Burmans , not the bhagees ) haven't seen bhagees over here , Mick |
