| Cactus Curtis | Bobbins I saw an ad locally for pickup bobbins (in Australia) and they just described the bobbins as PBT or ABS material. Can someone briefly tell me what the initials stand for? I know vintage pups were made from Forbon normally but just wondering waht these PBT and ABS stands for. These would be plastics I assume. |

| Fred Hammon | I thought everbody knew that ABS was Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene and PBT (Valox) is Polybutylene Terephthalate. Does this help? OK... I Googled it. ABS is one of the most commonly used plastics. Maximum Temp.: 160° F Softening Temp.: 175° to 220° F Tensile Strength: Good Impact Strength: Excellent Good electrical insulator, Machine with standard tooling Hardness: Rockwell R105 PBT Chemical resistance Outstanding dielectric strength Outstanding electrical properties High RTI up to 284° F (140 C) Low temperature performance down to -40° F Flame resistance Typical applications for Valox include: Electrical/electric connectors Smart network interface devices (SNID's) Power plugs and electrical components Switches and controls Circuit breaker enclosures Outdoor telecommunications enclosures Automotive under-hood components Electrical appliance components Fiber optic tubes Medical applications such as clamps, pump parts, plugs I have my bobbins molded from PC - Polycarbonate (Lexan) |

Hey Fred, I assume you have custom bobbins made? Or do you make them your self? I'm about to start making some custom design bass pickups, and I'm trying to find info on having plastic parts made, like covers and bobbins. These would be EMG 40 style soap bars. Any advice/info you (or anyone else reading this) care to share? Thanks David |
