Fiesty Fiester Bush Admits to Hearing Voices in His Head!
According to Yahoo News a new BBC documentary is about to allege that Bush started the Iraqi war because he heard a voice in his head from God telling him to start the war.

This is a startling revelation. Can any man really be fit to be president if he hears voices in his head -- AND BELIEVES THEY ARE REAL, AND MAKES DECISIONS BASED ON WHAT THE VOICES ARE TELLING HIM?

In sum, is this guy nuts? Anybody else would be institutionalized. Do we have a crazy person running the country and the world's most powerful military?

And what's so different about this and the crazy Islamic insurgents that say they hear voices in their heads telling them all western infidels must die?

Is Bush just another religious terrorist extremist, killing people based on his own flawed personal fantacys?

Should Bush be impeached becasue of this? Is anybody honestly comfortable with a crazy man running the country?

1) I don't particularly like the guy. He's not mad, or mentally handicapped, but I don't think he is competent enough for the task/job handed him. However...

2) "Voices" is a metaphor that people use to depict an ongoing internal debate, or even simply mental images of what they would say if anyone asked them about a topic. I don't consider aboriginal people who go on vision quests dictated by the voices of spirits to be nuts or mentally incapacitated. It's just the metaphor they feel comfortable with within their culture.
When someone says a "voice from God told them" to do something, yes they may be in need of a little Haloperidol with their Wheaties. But the odds are much greater, actually, that they are simply saying, in more colorful language, that after some thought they realized that, following their values (wherever those came from), they felt a commitment to pursue a certain course of action. People do that every single day, just before they put their pants on, go to work, and do the right thing. I can think of plenty of things to hold against the guy, but this isn't one of them. Don't let your own imagination run away with you.

*Don't let your own imagination run away with you.*

that's what Jaynes did in *The Origin of Consciousness* and I once again recommend it since nothing could be more on-topic for this thread.
