| Jake E. | Bush and SS reform, where does that leave us??? Looks like ol G.W. wants to reform social security and if your born after 1950 and make more that 25K a year then expect to really not get much back when you retire! I guess he's sending us a message that we better prepare to work till you drop dead or plan on living in a box under the bridge cause what you get in SS every month after retiring at 65 won't be enough to live on! My morning rant with NO cofee!.........! Jake E. BTW, to anon or anonorant Fuck off!!! |

BTW, SS was never meant to be a retirement account. That's is the problem. It is not actuarial, not savings, and not really all 'aid to the aged'. It was a progam meant to ease us out of the depression of the 30s. And as what is so typical of democracies, we did not get rid of it once it served it's purpose. If we want national retirement, we should load it up and run it like an annuity program. What we are seeing is the result of SS NOT being a retirement program. Now, I don't like W and I think the SS problem has been way overstated, however, there is a problem and it will not go away by ignoring it and not facing the real issue here which, by the way, is: SS is not a retirement program. BTW I'm not anon or whatever so I guess I don't get f&%(*& |

| rooster | Nobody likes W, Earl. I'm a conservative with old-style democrat leanings, and I don't like W. Laura Bush may be the only person who DOES like W. As far as SS, there are many problems with it. Personally, I think the idea of people putting their money away in a retirement account makes a LOT more sense, but one must take into account that 80% of the American people are willfully ignorant, and WANT the government to take care of them, so that they don't have to do it. Virtually every crisis we have is due to lack of forsight from years gone by, be it the energy shortage, the trade imbalance with China, the lack of adequate education, you name it. One side plays against the other with high profile crap to distract us, and for the most part, it works. We have a two-party system with both parties being the same people. Until a third party becomes viable, we are in for more of the same, so go buy some gold. And, if you think things are bad now, wait until Hillary wins in 2008. She will, there's nobody to run against her, and the memory of the American people is FAR too short to recall her corruption and pandering. What we need is Abe Lincoln, a man who did what was unpopular for the good of all. They don't exist anymore in the political world. The last great hope was Sonny Bono (don't laugh, nobody owned him), and there is NO replacement. So, you'll have some good material for writing Blues coming up over the next decade. rooster. |

| Carl S. | rooster - Can you explain to me what your idea of a conservative old-school democrat is? This is an honest question, I've heard the term old-school democrat and don't fully understand it. Perhaps we can get John McCain to run. I don't think anyone owns him either. |

| rooster | OK, these are some of my views, and I think they fall into the traditions of the Democrat party of years gone by, yet are tempered by the vision of what the founding fathers thought this country should be: Welfare - a hand up, not a hand out. I think the WPA was a pretty good idea to get people back working during the depression, if an able-bodied man says he can't find a job, he can work on the federal highways. Women with children should be helped out by the government, in order to ensure the future of the country. Spending - a budget needs to be somewhat balanced. A trade deficit such as the one with China needs to be immediatly halted. If a USA company can build a pair of shoes for $30 and they sell for $75, and goes out of business because a Chinese company can use slave labor and build a $2 pair of shoes which sell for $20, the Chinese shoes need $20 import tariffs on them. If people have to buy less goods and take care of them, that's life. Americans could afford the $75 shoes if they had a good job that paid living wages. Immigration - All illegal immigration needs to be prosecuted. If they do jobs that no American will do, you can bet someone will step up to the plate when the wages go up for that distasteful job. There are currently illegals (not undocumented, illegal) working construction for $10/hr, putting a taxpaying american out of a $20/hr job. Legal immigrations should continue. Schools - The state governments need to address the fact that spending piles of money per student does not increase their level of education. The neighborhoods that the poor kids live in work against them, the parents have no authority to "clean up" their neighborhood, and the police in those areas seem to only be rousting the easier targets, who are generally the kids that aren't bad kids. The gangs roam free. This needs to stop. The county work farm would be a good thing for aspiring crips/bloods/mafiosos. Research - Energy and Space research needs to be well-funded; All the research money will come back to the people in due time if pursued sensibly and aggressively. JFK performed one of the greatest services to the future of mankind by starting the race to the moon. Nowadays, not only are space shots passe, people actually wonder whether it's worth it. It is. It's what makes humanity human. To me, the great presidents were Roosevelt, Truman, JFK, Reagan. To me, the worst were Nixon, Carter, Clinton, Johnson, both Bush's. As to McCain, I can't trust him; he was part of the Keating 5, which destroyed the Savings & Loans, and helped cover up for Charles Keating. His wife used to steal drugs from the homeless emergency relief centers. He's a camera-mugging slug, who comes off very well, but he's bought and paid for by many special interests. Old school thoughts to be sure; To me, you save the world by throwing a rope to the fella in the quicksand, not by jumping in the quicksand with them. The Republicans want to run away from the quicksand, the Dems want to dive headfirst into it. NOBODY represents the working class in this country right now. If you buy into the R vs. D arguments, you're playing into their hands. You'll notice that the leaders of both parties are filthy rich, and ALL their hands are dirty. Find an honest one, and please let me know about him/her, so I have someone to vote for instead of against. TIA. rooster. |

| Bernie | Rooster, Well written! Have you ever considered a place in politics? Maybe the third party. Your insight on these matters seems very good. Seriously! Man, I am impressed. Bernie |

| rooster | Perhaps well written, but there will be many on this bb among other places who wholeheartedly disagree with me. Which is great! As long as they don't buy into the Bush vs. Kerry vs. Clinton vs. Gore vs. (fill in the stuffed shirt, Ted Kennedy comes to mind). I still say "Pat Paulson all the way!" rooster. |
