Rock my yarmulke! Just heard this story on weekend edition & thought many of you would enjoy it: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5009271 I particularly liked track #2 ("Makom"), but I recommend listening to all three... -- Mark |

A former student and a guy I see once in a while when he comes into town to visit his parents is a hiphop klezmer "arteest" who goes by the name of "Socalled" ( http://www.cdroots.com/hm-socalled.html ). He is working in NYC these days, but records at a friend's studio in town here. Haven't heard any of the album but he has good sensibilities as a musician, and its been nice to see his propgress as well as the writeups in the paper. Bastard still owes me a Cab Calloway album and a Boulez Conducts Zappa album, though! In many ways, the increased tolerance for, and presence of, modal music in general has opened up a world of possibilities for melding rock/pop/hiphop and world musics of almost every kind. From bhangra to kelzmer to dervish to didgeridoo, it all sounds wonderful and pleasantly at home. I don't have a fast enough connection at home here, but I'm looking forward to hearing these tracks when I get to work tomorrow. |

Addendum If you like this sort of stuff, we get a terrific show on CBC Radio, now on Saturday nights, called Global Village ( http://www.cbc.ca/globalvillage/ ). They play a lot of stuff from all over the globe that spans the gamut from western interpretations or importations of other musics, to foreign reprocessing of western music, as well as indigenous pop. Not always my tastes, but always interesting. |
