Busted... darn you, Microsoft! It seems like the licensed copy of Windows XP I recieved with a new computer was in fact counterfeit! So much for the great bargains on ebay... It was while doing the Windows Update that this was brought to my attention... this computer had passed the validation tests for both of the Service Packs but MSFT has evidently added some new tests to continue to qualify for updates from the MS site. MSFT offered to make my copy of Windows legitimate for the low price of $149.99, and it would scan my installed files to make sure that they were all kosher- and will send me a new CD within 2-4 weeks in case I need to reinstall Windows later. Call me a fool, but I decided to take MS up on their offer. Kinda makes me sad because I had to "rat" on the seller to qualify for the special offer, providing the name and URL of the guy who sold me the computer on ebay. Seriously! The on-line form required either a full street address or an authentic URL before it would process my order (I put down http://www.ebay.com/ as the URL since I got the computer through ebay!) Just wondering... do I have any recourse through paypal, which funded the transaction? Steve Ahola P.S. I have to hand it to MSFT for getting it right this time; when counterfeit copies of Windows XP were detected in the upgrade to Service Pack 1, the only option given was to reinstall Windows from scratch, which would require you to reinstall all of your programs. Better for them to accept my credit card payment and then make my installation legitimate. |

| Junior | Re: Ebay shmebay... Steve said, do I have any recourse through paypal, which funded the transaction? You cannot trust Ebay to do the (RIGHT) thing or Paypal as the same entity own both. All this entity wants is your money and do not care if you get screwed! I'm about to have to go round and round with Ebay again as I just had a seller Screw me royally and they will not do any thing about it. I've been down that road with them before and they will tell you (we will look into the matter) and that will be all they will do. Let MS f#^k with them for a while that will be good! Its all about money these days, people in this country are getting so greedy its getting pathetic! Sorry to have to tell you this but that's just they way it is. Let blame the Repubs. LOL........... Hey, every other post is blaming them, I might as well too. Junior |

Re: Busted... darn you, Microsoft! Whether they are just out to screw everyone or not, report the counterfeit product sale to both ebay and paypal. Yes I know they are the same company but they are different entities. At least make them have to be aware of it. Then go to the ebay section where you can provide feedback on the seller and report your experience. Who else will buy the cheap computer knowing he sells counterfeits? Anyone who doesn't care can live with the results. |
