Good Tone Control Mod Kit and 5E3 CHOKE kit
Would there be very many of you interested in a little $12.00 parts kit that allows you to modify the 5E3 tone stack by using a dual gang pot so each channel has it's own tone caps and 1m tone pot? It allows a tweaker to redo the oddly wired volume controls of the tweed tone/volume section exchanging it for improved volume control and tweaking of the tone a bit, by the channel (different caps if you want). The tone is almost the same but set to a different spot then stock.
I like it.
Actually, I've been building my Soulkicker 20 amps this way for a few years and since the cat is now out of the bag (so to speak), I can't see any reason why some of you homebrewers might not jump on and try it yourselves.
It really does work well and I think it's a good mod that is reversable if you don't like it.

Also, in conjunction with the humbucker mod, bass limiting mod and 6L6s mod, I've been adding a $20.00 5E3 choke parts kit to my 5E3 add on list.
It is pretty simple as its just a 3-5Hy 70ma choke (replacing the 5K-2W resistor) with a couple 470 resistors for the screen supply (mounted on the power tube sockets) two new 1k5 grid stoppers and a 27K-1W preamp node dropping resistor to replace the 22K.
I can supply art work with these kits of course.

Feedback please....

Would it be a concenteric pot or ganged?

Ganged, I can't find any reasonably price concentric pots and then there are no matching inner and outer knobs anyhow. Sort of a dead end for this application.

i would be interested in both the tone / volume kit as well as the choke one.

for a good price, it's alot easier for me as a builder / student to do this when everything is supplied at once with some instruction as well. sounds way better than running all over town to source the parts then asking a million questions on this board as to what values and such.

i like.

OK Johnny, since you are the first and only so far, how about free?
But you actually have to use the parts in a 5E3 clone of some kind and write a report for the 5E3 AMPAGE group.
Send me your shipping address

Bruce,
I'm still infatuated with my stock mission kit. I'm sure that in a few months I'll want to order the mods though.
If you have the time, can you tell me what a choke does differently than the components it replaces? Also, how does it affect the tone?

thanks

It only makes a couple more watts, but it very slightly tightens the woomph up and increases the preamp voltage a bit so the amp has a little more clarity and brightness.
In order to make this work the best, I suggest increasing the cathode biasing resistor of the power tubes to at least 300ohms, possibly as much as 360ohms.
To keep the screen voltage a little lower then the plate voltage you can feed the screens off the eyelet board with a single 2 watt 1000 ohm resistor.
