ever consider putting a triode/pentode switch in the amp? You can do this, along with using some 6K6s, and then a mild amount of attenuation on the output (like one of those resistive L-pads used for tweeter level control)

Yes, it was a thought. I have a Weber 50 watt Mass attenuator already, which I like quite a bit.  
 
Looking to give the mod Bruce suggested a try in the near future.
