Low power triode subs for 6V6's? Anybody know if there is a triode available that is a direct sub into a socket wired for a 6V6? I am curious to find out and see if I can get a lot less power out of my 5E3 for apartment practice without an attenuator. Thanks. Mike |

I don't know if this is the answer - but what about a 6K6? Aren't those less power and same pinoout? How much less I am not sure. Someone else can comment here. My only experience with them has been the reverb units. But NOS are available and not overly costly. Bruce (or anyone) would that work? Thorny |

I have used an umatched pair of NOS 6K6's in my deluxe. The tone is as good as 6V6's at moderate volume(IMOH). The only drawback was that the amp had slightly less break-up, and only cost about as much as NOS 5Y3. Overall, an un-modded deluxe w/6K6's is still a pretty loud amp. Mike Y. |

Yeah, that is what I seemed to remember. I was looking for a pin for pin octal triode tube that could be popped right in without any circuit mods. Probably too much to ask. Thanks for the replies guys. Mike |

Here: Two 6K6GTs but run a $1.00 10w 10Ohm resistor soldered on a 1/4" phone plug. Insert it in your aux speaker jack at the same time the speaker is still plugged into the normal speaker jack and just let it dangle (as long as it doesn't bump into anything). You'll be lucky if the actual speaker will see 5-6 watts now. American made 6K6GTs can still be found all over the place for under $6.00 to $7.00, sound really good and are REAL NOS tubes!! For what you are doing, it doesn't matter if they are matched or not and the amp being cathode biased, will make this a plug and play thing. Shoot, for some studio work, I've even run one 6V6GT or 6K6GT and a 5K 10 watt resistor across the empty socket's plate lug to ground and it works OK too. Weird but true. Bruce |

Thanks so much for the info Bruce. I will give that a shot, maybe even put the resistor in a tiny plastic project box and tie wrap inside the cabinet somewhere. Have a good one buddy! Mike |

That is a great idea. It is very simple and it makes excellent sense. Thank you. |
