Speaker's in 5E3
Hello all,

I'm looking for some feedback on a G12H30 in my 5E3. I now have a Red Fang, sounds great to me but at full tilt, the break-up is not as nice as the G12H30 is at full volume.

Before I put the Celeston G12H30 in my 5E3, are there any other speakers that would give me the bass and break-up as the Celeston? I seem to hear more definition of all the bass and high notes, they are not as garbled as the Red Fang at full tilt.

The Red Fang is very nice at low and middle volumes, very nice but at full volume, it seem to be a little harsh, lacking the bass that the G12H30 has.

What about a Jensen P12Q Reissue would that be more like the G12H30 ? Any other suggestions?

Thanks, Al

I've got the Electro Harmonix 12ALP in my amp right now. It seems to sound very good actually with a nice bright sound and a good breakup. It's rated at 25watts, alnico with about a 1 inch voice coil and it has a ribbed lightweight cone and a very small dust cover. This speaker is made by Emminence but I think you can only get it through Electro Harmonix, I got mine from New Sensor.

I would recommend a lightweight "cheap" speaker for this kind of amp something that even an amp this small can really kick, I think it sounds the best that way...

Why not a G12H30? Why are you looking for something else if you really like it? I borrowed 2 G12H30s for my 5E3x2 and they sound killer. If you like the G12H30 then use it.

I am really interested in hearing my weber signature alnicos when they get here. But I am afraid these G12Hs are spoiling me and I won't let my friend have his speakers back.

If you are concerned about the cost of a G12H, then find a good one on ebay. TopHat club deluxe amps (very close to a 5E3) sometimes use celestion greenbacks, and they sound GREAT. There are a lot of ways to get this done. I have had good luck with Celestion silver series V12 speakers too - I think they had a 60 or 65w model that I used and it sounded great. Weber has a MANY great speakers too - including a speaker modeled off the G12H30 (have not tried that one).

I have a cabinet I had built for me over at Avatar (http://www.avatarspeakers.com/) with one G12H30 and one Vintage 30. Awesome bottome end, and great crunch when driven hard. I use it with my home grown 12W class A amp, and it sounds amazing! You can order just speakers, or a cabinet from Dave at Avatar (who is great to deal with too).

BTW - just checked the website at Avatar (http://www.avatarspeakers.com/): he has some G12H80 speakers for half price ($42 +S/H !!!) and they are basically the 80W version of the G12H30. I may buy one just for kicks at that price. Look at the closeout link.

I tried a Greenback in my 5E3 and it sounded good when cranked, but at low to mid volumes it was a tad on the thin side and lacking in low end.

I've now got a Weber 12A125A (www.webervst.com) in it and am very happy. I'd check out Ted's huge array of speakers - he's bound to make one that would suit.

You cant beat a Celestion Blue for great cranked tone on the 5e3. I have a red fang in mine and agree .... at full tilt those fangs can bite. I roll off the treble quite a bit when Im pushing the 5e3 that much. Another solution... try some mullard pre-amp tubes they round out tone when cranked.
