Just about any pickup will change its tone if you change where you stick it under the strings, change its angle, or change its height, or change the strong gauge/scale, or change the body in substantive ways. So you don't even need to go beyond the tried and true of '52 to get "your own one of a kind tone". Given the number of permutations and combinations of that with existing pickups, for me the question automatically turns into "Well, of the traditional objectives that traditional pickups attempt to achieve, is there another or better way of doing it?". I think most builders are preoccupied with that one. Alternatively, some guys just aim for the traditional with a just-for-the-hell-of-it twist and listen to what their experiment produced.

Bear in mind, as well, that you don't need to confine yourself to magnet/coil-based pickups. What about optical?

HD Z-90
The most original pickup I have tried so far is the Harmonic Design Z-90....everything else seems to be in the same ballpark. Dimarzio makes some really different stuff but to me they are all bad sounding with poor tonal qualities, IMO. Duncan makes some interesting hotter versions of the same old stuff. I think trying different woods and pickup combinations will yield more of what you are looking for. Even changing bridges, nuts, pot values, the scale of the neck can make big changes to your sound. It seems a lot of guys are going with lower power pups, that will allow you to get real tone differences. I feel once a pickup reaches a certain point they loose their individuality.

I've designed a unique pickup, it's in the prototyping stages as we speak...

what i talking about is this:

there must be some new sounds that
you guys can come up with if you
break out of the mold!
why stick with the same tones
just because they are vintage!

someone do something new!!!!!!
