SK DAMMIT! I no longer have a single unique pickup
Seymour's custom shop has started producing what they call a "stra-90" HB which is a copy of my DualtoneII. That was the last one....
(also a full size HB in P-90 format, but I think others were already doing that as well)
My provisional patents have already expired, but THEY better not patent it!

Steven: you think Seymour cruised the small winder websites looking for ideas? I am really suspiscious about that one. Nobody was making a P90 in a humbucker housing except the small winders that I could see, now Seymour's ads read like he invented the idea. I guess when you 've been around a long time you need new ideas to keep the stuff selling. In my opinion he has way too many products, its just really confusing......Dave

A thread about this has come up at Seymour Duncan's forum in the Pickup Lounge.

Well, if a enough people start asking him for it, and tell him they can get one from someone else, but would prefer one from him, Seymour'd be an idiot not to start making a certain pickup. Having said that, violating patents or intellectual property law is not cool, but I don't see what's so bad about meeting customer demand.

Well I advertised a charlie christian copy with the long bar magnets in a buyers guide and about 8 months later Seymour had one too. Oh well.
I think the urge to patent is over rated. I have a dual tone which is made a bit differently but does essentially the same thing, made the first one about 8 years ago but I dont talk about it, also the PAF in a P-90, done that as has Novak.
there are so many guys out there tinkering they often come up with the same thing, alot of it is just common sense IMO and I would be pissed if someone patented some of this stuff that has either already been done or just takes common sense to figure out.
It does get on your nerves though when someone comes out with a similar product that was once unique to your business but what are you going to do? Knock them over the head with better quality or come up with something new.
Its like playing guitar, do you play with your back to everyone so they dont steal your licks?
Some guys do- I say let go of it.
On the other hand I dont go around giving away some of the information I have that took either years to get or alot of time to compile.

It's annoying is all. I know the reality of it for me is to just keep doing what I do and not worry about patents and infringement. I decided that years ago. Hell, I still sell quite a few basic strat pickups and who DOESN'T make those....
As for the quewstion about surfing the sites....YES, I bet someone there does, at least the forums and review sites. Besides, even if they aren't really looking for ideas, they are always looking for patent infringements they can stop.
