| anon | Re: low volume sustain Also, keep in mind that for 12ax7s, the higher the value of the cathode resistor, the more negative is the grid bias, and the lower is the slope of the plate curve. You can verify this by looking at the plate curves for various bias settings available in the RCA receiving tube manual. The important thing is the slope of the plate curve. The lower the slope, the lesser is the increase in a tube's output for a given increase in it's input, thereby increasing it's compression. This means that if you are designing for sustain rather than dynamic range, you tend to bias a little higher (i.e., run your grid more negative). Keep in mind of course that the more you increase sustain, the less dynamic range you will have. Why? Because that's what compression does. It reduces dynamic range. I don't think anyone is ever going to accuse a 5E3 of having too much dynamic range. |

| Shea | I always thought the vibrato channel of an AB763 Fender with reverb has nice sustain when clean. If I were you and I had 3 triodes to mess with, I'd use that preamp circuit, even if I won't be using reverb - i.e., the first two gain stages plus the reverb / dry mixer stage, with just the dry input.
