5e3, strat, classic rock sound - speaker? Another Dillema! I am primarily using a strat with 'hot vintage noiseless' pick-ups and sometimes a humbucker guitar. I understand that the 5e3 is not a high-gain amp. That's ok! I am looking for a 'classic rock' sound. I would like to dirve it hard and get a nice break up, with some compression but retain the upper midds & high end for definition; all of this for lead work. Another application would be chordal rhythm work, not strumed but picked, string by string, clean to crunchy. After listening to sound samples and reading this and other discussions, I am still undecided. I would like to keep the price tag around $100 US. What are your experiences and oppinions on the following: Weber VST - 12A125x series (P12x), 12F125x series (C12x), Ceramic Blue Dog (seriously considering this one) Celestion: G12H-30, G12M-30 (Greenback) - bit more money is ok here Jensen Reissue - P12R, P12Q Thank you very much for your input!!! |

| Wayne Dyer | I'm more than happy with the 30W Ceramic Blue Dog in my 5E3. It delivers in the upper mids without sounding honky or hollow, and this combo has good definition. I haven't really had the chance to work it at stage volume, though. -W- |

Wayne/Oglo, I've got a 15W ceramic Blue Dog on it's way for my Mission Tweedy Deluxe. The amp is finished save for the speaker. I'm dying to hear it (and crossing my fingers that I don't have any build errors). Bruce said most of the Tweedy Deluxes he's measured are putting out 9.5 - 10.5 watts with the hottest he's seen about 12.5 watts. Was curious if you knew what the ramifications of using a higher wattage speaker vs. one closer to the amp wattage rating was. I'd heard that Weber's amp ratings are conservative anyway so I went with the 15 watt. BTW Oglo, Ted Weber suggested the ceramic Blue Dog or the 12F150 for my 5E3 based amp. He's got sound files for both of those and they both sound great, although different. For a classic Deluxe sound, of those two, the 12F150 may be the best choice. |

Ron that figure of 9.5-10.5 watts output is real wattage as measured across a pure DC resistance of 8ohms and at 100Hz (one hundred Hertz) with a 100mvac signal on the input. Also, that's viewing the AC voltage out of the OT secondary with my O'scope across that same resistor, setting the output for a MAX output (pure sine wave) right before visual distortion on the O'scope screen. The amp is capaple of delivering more total envelope power then that but it's distorted.. (oh yeah, sweet distortion)... but flat out, fully cranked - "rockin' dog",... they still don't hit more then 17-18 watts and all those Weber 15 watt speakers can run with it easily. Bruce |

Thanks Bruce for the clarification. I'm painfully new to this electronics stuff, but am thoroughly enjoying my education. |

| Benboom | I really like the Eminence Legend GB in my tweed Deluxe. It doesn't cost as much as the Blue Dogs, either. But speakers are such personal things...you have to try it for yourself. |

I have a Weber Ceramic Blue Dog in my 5E3 clone. I went for the 50 watt model so that I could build bigger amps later on. it is a really sweet speaker with great level and awesome tone. I have used it with lower wattage amps too, and it sounds great. |
