Start by looking through very old issues of relevent magazines for ideas that were a little premature. Then try the review of patent applications in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (usually available in the engineering section of your local university library). Then listen to music you would not ordinarily listen to, and I mean VERY different music. Try Vietnamese pop music, bouzouki music, Peruvian folk music, and cutting edge 20th/21st century composition, etc. |

I think sometimes its natural, just a different part of the brain doing the thinking. When I want some inspiration though, I have occasionally gotten it from conventional wisdom where I become suspicious that the foundations are not quite as firm as they should be. When I find an area where the original professor was wrong but so far unchallenged, there are sometimes high tech developments based on the early work that can be brought into question. Mike |
