zachary vex clarification and apology
i'd like to offer an apology to RG and the rest of the forum. i've disrupted this budding, unique, and rather special forum by misinterpreting* a post by RG (the one that starts "Why I") and reacting to him in an insensitive and unproductive way. RG, you are a decent, caring person, and i didn't mean to imply otherwise. i could have chosen my words more carefully.

i hate fear. i hate limitations, i hate the idea of not being able to do anything i want. i hate following the rules, i hate being told i can't do something. i hate it when someone insists on defining limitations for themselves or others that are unjust.

RG has a right to believe any way he wants. and to express himself any way he wants. so do i, but i don't have the right to screw up something decent going on here in the process. nor do i have a right to screw with RG. he's always been decent to me. arrogantly over-cautious, but certainly decent. 8^)

in the future, i will strive to be the same old me as always, but not direct it at anyone in particular. except some who is asking for it. by name. my name. 8^)

*i thought he was posting about himself and his own reasons for not becoming a boutique pedal manufacturer.

Cool, thank you. Takes a big man to do that.

Personally, I thought the two viewpoints were great character studies - two very different ways of looking at an interesting biz.

Aside from the harsh comments, seeing the extremes was very educational.

Thank you both for your views!

Zachary,

As Joe said, it took a big man to say that.

For my part, I overreacted to your tone, as opposed to what you said, for there were some really useful gems in your post for the budding entrepreneur. I just had a bout of situational blindness about them. And I do apologize for that.

I think I have a much more productive way for both of us to interact to the assistance of people who may be thinking of starting an effects business. I'll start that with another post topic.

Apology accepted, and please accept mine.

R.G.

And that's pretty much why I like all three of you.

I am happy to see the board has gotten a more positive spin on it, at first everyone seemed to be down on the idea of running your own shop.
I do it, I dont mind the paperwork, I dont mind long stretches of making the same stuff over and over. It beats working for some dummy and take me for example, once you have made every mistake you possibly could and fail over and over you finally figure out how to make it work that and waiting untill its your turn to go full time.
Once you grow into pushing yourself everyday to get you stuff together as long as you dont sit back and let it go to hell there is no reason you cant be more successful than you imagined unless youre really out of touch with reality :)
also why settle for being happy and broke?
Be happy and make money. If your not making money figure out what you have to change to make money.

I figure that was directed at me, and fair enough. Thing is I'm not settling for it - I'm thinking and planning and it can take time. I have a friend who's an MBA (I can feel RG's blood pressure rising ;) ) and according to him I'm mad for making amps the way I do. Production on a larger scale - outsourcing assembly and PCB's are the way to go.
But I don't want to do that....after 25 years I'm going to do what makes me happy first, then think about how to turn it into squillions ;).
I'm viewing my current situation as something of a sabatical - and a happy one at that.

Pete :)

That's really a healthy and positive attitude. Think about what you like to do, and then figure out how to make that work for you business-wise. As opposed to just settling for assuming you will be doing drudgery. "Make the mountain come to Mohammed", so to speak.

I like that.
