| Evster | Tube sound card? Whouldn't it be cool to feed off AOpen's mobo idea and make some sort of tube based sound card? Aren't there 12 V tubes out there for a PCI solution? Essentially swap out some of the transistors and insert the tubes. 6K11s? An idea...or a separate 6 tube/6 channel tube preamp on the way to the surround amp/powered speakers? There would be HUGE interest for this. Perhaps we could distribute a PC board design to Ampagers only |

| zachary vex | i have no idea what the operating voltages are, but i saw a recently-released tube card advertised somewhere. it might have been in tape-op magazine or mix. on a related but different note, i was approached by a company that makes road-worthy computers to design a direct-in box that sounds like my nano head. of course, making a cabinet emulator is entirely different from making a tube head... but my point is that there is interest in combining tubes with computers. |

I still don't understand why, in the midst of all the assorted and sundry superhuman efforts to cool down mobos that I see each month in Maximum PC, someone would want to go and stick tubes in the same box. A tube-based interface box that sends an output to or from a USB port? Sure, I can see that because the heat generated is at least off-board. But tubes *inside* the case strikes me as anathema to everything else that's going on inside there. Call me kooky. I guess I'm just a relic from that generation that remembers how the "computer room" needed to have a separate heating/cooling/ventilation system to prevent crashes. |
