| Robert | Storing magnetised alnico pole pieces I wonder if anyone could tell me how to store pole pieces such that they do not adversely each others magnetic strength. I recieved some in the mail last week and they where all stuck together. Should I pair them up? Separate them? Stick them to a piece of steel? What's the go here? |

They shold be arranged neatly into a "brick" in other words stuck together. you need to be more careful when you pull them apart, sliding them in the direction of least resistance to seperate them could demagnetize them. Putting them like pole to like pole together can demag them. Normally if they are in a neat brick they wil be arranged NSNSNS, thats how you want them. |

| Robert | Jason, thankyou for your reply. I'm having trouble visualizing a 3D brick with all the poles NSNSNS. When I recieved these 18 pieces they were arranged as three triangles of 6 pieces stacked on top of each other. Each triangle was was like bowling pins with the back row (of four) removed. It seemed to me that like poles would be together so I broke this arrangement up and paired them up NS SN (SIDE VIEW) and separated each pair. The only way to keep the poles NSNSNS would be to have a square rather than triangular lattice in the brick. NSNS SNSN NSNSN (TOP VIEW) SNSNS Is this correct? |

| anonymous | The correct way to avoid any adverse effect on the magnetisism over long periods of time is to have a metal strip between each "layer" of magnets...this effectively shunts the magnetic force away from other nearby magnets... thus, where ==== equals a strip of ferro-magnetic material: NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN ================== SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS |

Now there you go, people like me that have learned most of this stuff by direct experience wouldnt know the correct way to do it. All I know is how its normally done in practice. When you buy magnets in bulk or have custom magnets made also assuming the factory mags them you will get them in a brick. NSNS SNSN NSNS Horseshoes are a different matter and normally you do use keeper bars on them. |

| Robert | A right angled brick it is then. Thanks. |
