Should we add a "forum policies" to the reading list?

SK Should we add a "forum policies" to the reading list?
I was just thinking that we should probably put up a simple note on requesting recomendations for pickups/pickup makers. We get a few thru regularly and I feel (and it appears most others do as well) that this isn't appropriate here.
I don't want this to become an area of competition or a spam forum as I feel that would interfear with the free sharing of information. If I'm alone on this, I'll drop it. If everyone else feels the same I'll post the note.

Go for it.

Construction, what to dos, tips are all fine, but recommending this over that is not what we're here for.

We all have our own preferences but should try not to colour others judgements or rubbish any maker, perhaps with one exception!

I agree.

If anyone wants peoples opinions of musical stuff they should go to Harmony central. They have a review site and that probably gets more traffic on that subject than this forum anyway.

It would have to be very short (not a link to a FAQ-file, and (IME --on a lot of forums) the type of poster you're referring to won't read it --until it's pointed out to them. :D

This is one of the prices you pay for having a self-moderated (basically) forum. Some of the offending posters will turn into valued contributors, if given a chance --and re-pay your courtesy by fielding beginner questions, later on ;)

So what you're saying is that a short mission or charter that anyone can grasp and read in a few minutes would do it?

Here's my take on it:

***
1. This forum is about demystifying and building guitar pickups. It covers the craft, the suppliers, the design, the theory, and sometimes even wild-blue-yonder ideas. It is about sharing information.

2. If anyone wishes to advertize here and line their pockets at this forum's expense, then we reserve the right to line our pockets at the advertizer's expense. Advertizing space on this forum will be allocated in 50x50 pixel blocks at $100,000/yr with a one year minimum, cash funds only.

3. Play nice. We are a virtual community and it only works well if people are polite and tolerant. It's about sharing, remember?

Hm. Surely, someone else can do better.

We take these truths to be self-evident. ;)

Okay, how's this for a charter?

This is a guitar pickup makers forum that tries to answer two questions:
1.) How did they make that?
2.) How can I make that?

Sometimes the questions are theoretical and nearly metaphysical, but mainly it's about getting tools, materials, and learning skills.

It is not a venue for advertizing one's product.

The idea is to share what you know and flame what you don't...

uh...waitasecond...
