Hi all,
new to the fourm but the info has been great so far ...
I am doin pups for my strat what i have done is put i think its nylon strip around the magnets then put varnish to lock it down ..i'm looking at it as protecting the wire from shorting on the magnets is this a better technic then just putting the varnish on the magnets? and will it cause any problems in the long run ? any info greatly appr..

I'm sure it'll work great. I personally use "thread sealer" tape which is used to seal plumbing threads. It's also very very thin, so it takes up no coil space.

That teflon plumbing tape also protects the windings if your buyer decides to adjust the pickup pole stagger with a hammer.

Well all sounds good but maybe slightly overkill, I just use a good quality cellulose tape, like old style cellotape.

The stuff I get is stable up to 170 degrees so I'm still able to pot safely.

wax after the wind or varnish while winding?

I think I'm too green to answer, but I'll try anyway. I think you want to do the "potting" procedure after the winding is done because the basic way to know if all the gaps are filled is to have the pickup soaking and doing that until there are no more bubbles. I think it is SK who uses sanding sealer and I like that idea better than wax. I've done the wax thing, with fine results, but all that boiling water and chance of melting stuff is a pain in the ass if sanding sealer is going to work just as well.
Ok, now the 'big guns' can correct me if I'm wrong.
