swt taller bobin..what to expect?
If i wound a Tele pickup for example, with the exact values, but a bit taller, and to the same resistance, what should i expect?. Cleaner sound, with a little more output?. Thanks for any help.

In my limited passive experience...

Taller bobbin/same resistance = lower inductance = higher resonant frequency = brighter/clearer pickup.

As far as more power... I would think not as you have the same amount of turns but, Jason or the others should be able to put more scope on that one.

I'd go along with Tone.

Just a tad brighter and perhaps a little clearer and more focused but powerwise I think you'd be hard pressed to notice any difference,

Wouldn't that mean that the magnets would come closer to the string and also create a larger overall magnetic field, thus strangling the strings vibrations, and hence losing some upper harmonics and sustain a bit?

SWT doesn't refer to string height.... we are assuming the string height is unchanged as he was clearly focusing on taller coil properties given all the same other parameters.

I normally use taller magnets to pack more wire on or use larger gauge wire so I dont have a definitive answer but another factor involved is that longer magnets have more pull, something I overlooked for years untill Barney at Doweling pointed it out to me when I was ordering some 3/16" X 1/4" alnico 5 rods.
1/4" long alnico 5 rods almost dont even stick together, 3/4" are noticeably stronger than 1/2" so aside from coil shape and size the magnet length is going to affect output and tone to some extent.

Tone is correct. The length/height of the polepieces and profile of the coil is separate from where you have them set to. For that matter, you can take flat coils and jam them up against the strings too.

On the other hand, I would think that a taller coilform/bobbin also creates more degrees of freedom for scatterwinding than a shorter bobbin, so one might expect the tone to also be influenced by that too. Just bear in mind that this is only the *potential* for scatterwinding. One still has to decide to take advantage of it or not.

I've asked it on the Guitar Tech forum a while back, but in the company of more sage peope I'll ask it again: has anyone ever tinkered with polepieces bevelled along their midsection? That is, polepieces with a more "hourglass" shape? (tapered a bit towards the middle of the polepiece but cylindrical towards the ends).

I'm wondering if this provides a means of packing on a little more wire in the same sized package, or alternatively using a thicker wire to yield a lower
impedance. Just a thought.
