They sure are.  
 
Vendors recommend a 4:1 length to width ratio on pieces of Alnico's 2 thru 6 so they are more resistant to demagnetization.  
 
Ceramics, Alnico's 8 and higher are more immune to size and shape restrictions. This allows Joe Barden's C5 magnets can have an almost square aspect.

MagnetSource said that Alnico 5 rods were fine if you had at least two of them stuck end-to-end.  
 
I set them flat (not standing) on an iron strip and they seem okay.
