Hi All,I was wondering... is it...
Hi All,
I was wondering... is it possible to wind a pickup to have more bass, or more treble? I have been experimenting with scatter winding, and I realized that my pickups sound , well, like a neck pickup in the neck position, and a bridge pickup in the bridge position. Even when wound EXACTLY (or as close as humanly possible) the same.
Any tips to wind a 'bassy' pickup, or a 'trebly' pickup?
Cheers

This is exactly why we make active pickups.... its so easy to dial in and out, pretty much what frequency's you desire. This is extremely difficult with passive pickups but can be done to some degree. You will always get a huge difference between neck and bridge positions with the same pickup due to the nature of the strings on the guitar and there is nothing can be done about this....

Apparently Frahlin reports that by using a ferrous base plate on a Strat pu, much the same as the Tele bridge unit, you can increase the bass response by up to 10% without affecting the highs. As you know high end can be controlled to a degree by the amount of wire you put on the pickup and also the inductance will inversely affect resonant peak which of course will affect the tonal charactaristics. Its all a balancing act and I'm sure Andy, Wolfe or Jason will give you much more info than I can on passive units as this is not my forte...

I only ask because I am going to attempt to wind there PAFs for a Gibson copy (like a SG Custom) and there wont be much room between the pickups. (And the bridge pickup is pretty bassy, and the neck pickup is pretty trebly)So if they all were the same, it would defeat the purpose.
In the bridge position, I am trying to get that almost tele-ish sound a Les paul can get in the bridge position. (I know that the maple cap has a lot to do with those highs, though:))
Heres hoping!
Dick :)
