Australian wire manufacturers? Anyone know of any Australian manufacturers/distributors of copper wire appropriate for pickup winding (preferably in the Sydney area)? |

Matt Try Australian Isola Materials.... they make AWG 42 (0.063mm), 43 (0.056mm)& 44 (0.050mm) in PUR1 which is solderable and easier to use than anything else. Their head office is at Mittagong and they also have an outlet in Milperra. Go to the link below and look in the contact information link for their phone numbers and address. http://www.tyree.com.au Cheers Tony |

Another Question for Tone Thanks Tone: I contacted Australian Isola Material and enquired about: 42 AWG copper wire: Which is 0.0633 mm when bare and 0.07112mm with Single build polyurethane insulation which is what I want. They told me they have: 0.06, 0.07 and 0.071 in PUR. The minimum amount of 0.071 PUR I can order is 5kg (about 10 times more than I need!) for Australian $11.77 + $3.16. Does that sound right to you in terms of price? (it seems incredibly cheap to me - another place quoted me A$90 for 2kg!) Also I noticed you had written that AIM make AWG 42 (0.063mm)in PUR1. Is PUR and PUR1 different? |

Matt My reels state 0.063 ???? And it is PUR 1 which is what I have always used... I'm not sure if PUR is different, you will need to ask AIM. That minimum 5Kg is bullshit... I usually order two or three reels of different sizes but when I was only ordering one at a time I would only get 2 to 3Kg reels. And a reel this size should cost you around $105 AUD. That price they gave you would be per kilo. The second quote sounds more like it... I know there are places that do smaller reels.... Yes they do make 0.063 in PUR1 and if they tell you different then i have some here to prove it... I deal with the Adelaide branch with a guy named Steve Atkinson, he is excellent to deal with... Sounds to me like your getting a little bit of the run around. How much do you want as I have some 0.063 reels left with probably a couple of hundred grams left on them, I never use the ends of the reels because my winder tends to snap the wire when its getting low. If you would like some I can send it over to you for what the wire is worth plus the shipping....??? Usually no more than $20 AUD Tone |

Hi Tone, In regards to guage: I was going off the details I was provided with on this forum below (see the thread titled 43 and 42 gauge in mm?)the bare wire of 42 AWG is equal to 0.0635mm, but with the single build insulation around it becomes 0.0712mm. AWG 43 is equal to 0.0559mm when bare and 0.635mm when insulated. In regards to PUR and PUR1: I might be mistaken about what they told me - I didn't write it down at the time and all I remembered hearing was PUR. I'll check to make sure when I call again. In regards to minimum 5kg: I called the Sydney office and they were telling me about what they currently had available there (not what AIM make): 0.06, 0.07 and 0.071 (5kg smallest currently). At the price they quoted me (which seemed excessively cheap) I wasn't at all concerned about getting 5kg. I'm after enough 42 AWG wire to wind at most 5 single coils (8400 turns each) - So I figured 500g should be all I need. I'll give them another call again tomorrow to see if I can arrange to get what I'm after at a price I can afford. If I can't I'll take you up on that offer. Thanks, Matt. |
